Induction + Licence

Obtaining a food licence through Brisbane City Council is unavoidable; however with us, this process need not be so painful. After attending our kitchen tour we will send you a helpful guide to assist with filling out the form and a list of suggested next steps to get your food business off the ground.

Book

Now you have your food licence all you need to do is contact us to hire the kitchen. We will send you a booking form for you to complete. We will also send you a welcome letter which hopefully will answer any remaining questions you might have.
Our kitchen hire is available 24/7, 365 days a year.

Cook

On your first visit to the commercial kitchen we will conduct an induction with you where we explain how to operate any pieces of equipment that you are not familiar with, explain the cleaning procedures and show you how to lock up once you have finished (if the office is unattended).

Our experience in the food and hospitality industry goes back over 35 years. We've worked in hotel kitches, run restaurants, owned a catering company, run/owned cafes and now we want to pass our experience on to you.
New businesses can be tough. But there is no failure. Somtimes you win & sometimes you learn.

At Book to Cook, whether it's our kitchen hire, consultation services or community, we want to pass on any experience we can to help you with your new or current ventures and dreams. Our wealth of knowledge from having made past mistakes, is all here waiting for you.

How do I apply for a food licence?

This is a fairly easy process and not as daunting at it may first seem. Contact us if you are having trouble completing any of the sections. Lodge the form with council (either online or in person at a council office), pay the annual fee (approx $700) and wait for council to contact you.

Do I need another food licence if I am selling food at a market?

This will depend upon the type of food you are selling. The basic rule of thumb is that if you are cooking or heating food on site at the market then you will also need to apply for a temporary food stall holders licence. If you are just selling packaged food that remains packaged from the time it leaves our kitchens then you only need to have the food licence that you would have applied for to cook in our kitchen.

Do I need to obtain a food supervisors certificate?

The short answer is no you don’t as there are no longer any legal requirements for a nominated food safety supervisor to obtain certification. Essentially council needs to have a contact for the business who is responsible for food handling so that in the event there is an issue they have someone to contact who will be able to answer any queries. However if you are dealing with medium to high risk food categories and do not have industry experience or qualifications then it is recommended that you undertake a food safety supervisors’s certificate course.

Will I need to share the kitchen?

Most of our quoted rates are a shared rate. This means that there maybe other businesses operating in the kitchen tab the same time. However it is large kitchen and we will always make sure that you have everything that you need and are nor compromised on space or equipment. As long as you let us know beforehand how much space you require and what equipment you need we will make sure that we do not book anyone else in at the same time that needs the same equipment as you. We will also allocate you your own work area. the only equipment that you will share will be the dishwasher but as it is large commercial washer with a cycle that only lasts a few minutes this is not an issue.

Do I need any insurance ?

Yes we require that as a minimum you obtain Public Liability insurance. We have our own insurance but having your own insurance will also protect your business as you will be selling your food products to the public. We can put you in touch with an industry insurance broker who understands the food industry and offers competitive rates (NB: we do not receive any commissions or payments from this).

What else do I need to do to set up my business?

This will depend upon your individual business but essentially all businesses will need a food licence, public liability insurance and a registered ABN and business name ( we can also assist with this if you are unsure who to contact). There may be some other things that you will need to do before you commence trading e.g. register at a market to sell your products, organise labelling if selling wholesale, source suppliers. We may be able to help or advise in some cases so please take advantage of our experience and industry contacts. We are here to help your business grow and succeed.

How long does it take to get my food licence?

This will obviously depend on council but generally it takes 2-3 weeks from the time that you lodge your application and pay your fee.

When are you starting up cooking classes?

Soon! We promise. We are as excited as you are and have some very exciting things happening for the near future. Watch this space!

What hours is the kitchen available?

We operate 24/7 so you can choose a time that suits you. If you are requiring access outside of our office hours we will give you a code for our key safe so you can let yourself in. The kitchen is monitored by security cameras 24 hours and the carpark is fully lit at night time.

Will I be able to get help if I don’t know to use any of the equipment?

Yes, on your first booking we will give you a comprehensive induction where we explain how to use all the equipment you are unfamiliar with as well as cleaning and security procedures. We are also contactable by phone 24 hours.
